We had a good discussion on In the Balance. The conversation mostly centered around on how society develops. Chad is leaving us for Arizona in the new future. Hopefully he will start the Phoenix chapter of the Nashville Science Fiction Book Club. We will be reading Interface as the book for March.

We discussed the website and decided that we would add RSS feeds to individual blogs if need be. I have set up a group on vox as well for science fiction news. Phil also cleaned out the spam from the message boards. If you have a blog or website that you want added to the blog send either Phil or myself a link. If you would like to see the website changed let us know what we can do also.

If you have a vox account, I have set up a group with an RSS feed that you join and post too. http://scifimedia.groups.vox.com/

Next meeting will be Wednesday, March 5th. At the Phunky Pancake near 100 oaks.

Book of the Month

We will be meeting Wed. January 9 to discuss I Am Legend by Richard Matheson at the Camino Real restaraunt in Antioch (next to Target and Shoney's) at 7pm.

Discussion Questions:
This story was written in 1954. Does it stand the test of time, or is it outdated?

Robert Neville continues to live in his own home; what does this say about his character?

Two different kinds of vampires are formed; is this realistic or does it come off as contrived?

A couple of movie adaptations have been made of the novel; do they hold up? Why?

The pacing of the book is quite slow; does this hurt the story?

Stephen King has admitted to being influenced by Matheson's work, particularly this novel. Is Matheson's influence present in any other modern authors.

The ending is poignant. What was Matheson saying?

A group is trying to do a second season to Firefly. They are trying to do it by DVD subscription or by downloading, making it network free. We could be looking at the future of TV here if it works. Subscription not to a channel but to a show and only paying for that show. The technology is here, will the consumers respond? Either way, I would be pretty excited about a second season of Firefly. Help the guys out and fill out the survey at fireflyseason2.com
